The drive home was a blur. He gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. He had fantasized about this reunion for years, but the reality was a blow to the gut. The casual indifference he'd received from her felt like a physical wound.

He slammed the car into park, the sudden jolt jarring him. He sat there for a long time, staring straight ahead. The streetlights cast elongated shadows across the empty street.

He got out of the car. He breathed deeply, letting the cool night air wash over him. Then, he leaned against the car, and just stood there, lost in thought.
