Gemotions

The rejection letter felt heavy, a physical weight in her trembling hands. She'd envisioned this moment so many times, the triumphant phone call, the celebratory champagne. Instead, there was this crisp, impersonal paper, a polite dismissal of her life's work. She wandered to the window, the city lights blurring through unshed tears. The manuscript sat on her desk, a silent testament to her failure.

She pulled the curtains shut, plunging the small apartment into a dim, comforting darkness. The scent of old books and stale coffee, a familiar comfort, did little to soothe the ache in her chest. She reached for a worn, leather-bound journal, its pages filled with the ghosts of past attempts, of hopes and dreams that had similarly crumbled. She ran a hand over its cover.
