Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Amelia's throat as she pulled out the trunk. It was her grandmother's, a repository of forgotten things. A single beam of sunlight sliced through a crack in the boarded-up window, illuminating the swirling dust motes. She hadn't been up here since the funeral, and the smell of mothballs and aged paper instantly brought tears to her eyes.

She lifted the heavy lid. Inside, nestled beneath yellowed lace and a faded wedding dress, was a small, leather-bound album. Her grandmother's handwriting, spidery and familiar, adorned the cover: "Our Golden Years." Amelia flipped through the brittle pages, expecting the carefully curated narrative she knew so well.

Then she saw the photograph: her grandfather, arm-in-arm with a woman who was definitely not her grandmother, laughing in front of a speakeasy. The image was grainy, black and white, but the joy on their faces was undeniable. A strange tightness squeezed Amelia's chest, a feeling of the ground shifting beneath her feet. The carefully constructed stories of her family, the unwavering narratives she'd grown up with, suddenly seemed flimsy, fragile.
