He sat on the park bench, the worn wood cool against his palms. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the old oak tree above him, scattering dappled sunlight onto the ground. The notification had popped up just as he was about to switch off his phone, a simple “Follow” request from Mr. Henderson, his English teacher.

His heart began to pound a frantic tattoo against his ribs. He pictured Mr. Henderson, a man known for his piercing gaze and dry wit, scrolling through his feed. He cringed, imagining the comments on his recent posts about the band he loved.

He felt the familiar knot of insecurity tighten in his chest. Was this some kind of passive-aggressive move? A way to subtly judge his choices? He chewed on his lip, studying the patterns of the brick pathway. The world, which had seemed straightforward moments before, suddenly felt fraught with hidden meanings.

He kicked a small pebble across the concrete, the sound echoing the turmoil within him.
