The elevator doors opened, and Sarah stepped out, her hand still resting on the cool metal railing. The announcement hung in the air, a heavy weight that seemed to have altered the very atmosphere. Her steps felt heavier, each one a slow, deliberate act. The office, usually bustling with energy, was hushed, the murmurs of hushed conversations a jarring undertone to the hum of the computers.

She passed Mr. Henderson’s office. He was the one who taught her everything when she had just started. The door was slightly ajar. She saw his hunched figure and knew he must have heard the news too. The past flooded her senses – the mentorship, the camaraderie, the shared successes – all colored by the uncertain future.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if watching a movie about her own life. She reached her desk, but didn’t sit down. The bright screen, the neatly organized files, felt alien. She leaned against the wall, her arms crossed, and closed her eyes.
