The flickering fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum a mocking tune. Amelia stared at her half-eaten sandwich, the crusts starting to curl at the edges. She had been so sure this promotion was hers. Years of late nights, successful pitches, and always going the extra mile. And now… it was down to her and David.

She pushed the sandwich away, a sudden wave of nausea washing over her. The air in the break room felt thick, heavy. She glanced at the clock – 2:17 pm. Only three more hours until she could leave and pretend everything was normal.

David was outside, probably chatting with the boss, basking in the sun. She could feel a twitch in her eye. She was not envious, no, she was merely… observing. That was all.
