The smell of stale coffee clung to the air as Liam slowly paced the confines of his small apartment. The eviction notice, a stark white rectangle, lay on the coffee table. He stopped at the window, the city a cold expanse of grey.

He traced the outline of a crack in the windowpane. It was a small thing, he knew, but it felt representative of everything. He felt a deep ache within him, a kind of hollowness he couldn't quite name.

He closed his eyes and imagined the faces of his friends and family, their laughter and their shared stories. He knew he'd have to tell them. He sighed, the sound lost in the vastness of the empty apartment.
