The envelope, sealed but unposted, felt cool against Clara’s fingers. Her grandmother’s elegant script, so familiar, yet so distant, stared back at her. Inside, a typed draft, a letter to a theater company, dated 1965. It was a rejection, a withdrawal of her application for a lead role.

Clara traced the cursive signature at the bottom, her thumb smudging the faded ink. She pictured her grandmother, young and full of dreams, the weight of the world pressing down. Her throat tightened. She remembered her grandmother’s stories of the stage, filled with a vibrancy that belied the sadness Clara now felt in the old words.

A lump formed in her throat. She understood the dream. Her own career felt stagnant. She imagined the young woman's heart breaking as she wrote this letter. Clara’s own ambitions felt less clear suddenly, as if her grandmother’s old choices were casting a shadow.
