Rain lashed against the windows of the coffee shop, mirroring the storm brewing inside Thomas. He sat hunched over the small table, the letter resting between his trembling hands. The paper was worn, creased from countless readings over the years, a testament to the pain it held. He felt a deep, twisting ache in the pit of his stomach.

The cafe was warm, the air thick with the aroma of coffee and baking bread, but Thomas felt a chill deep in his bones. He hadn't thought about her in years, not actively, but the letter, this belated acknowledgement, had opened a floodgate. The faces of his colleagues around him blurred into one another.

He remembered the day he received the letter like it was yesterday: the shock, the anger, and then, the slow, insidious creep of hurt. The words, once so raw and cutting, now felt like whispers from a distant shore. He slowly unfolded it again, tracing the familiar lines of the handwriting, and a strange sense of exhaustion washed over him. He felt the need to retreat, to disappear.
