The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Clara ran a hand over a trunk, the wood cool and unyielding. The will stipulated “sentimental items” for her, and she was sifting through the detritus of a life she barely knew. Her brother, Leo, had the deeds to their grandfather’s vineyard, the tangible wealth.

A heavy silence had fallen over the attic. Clara found a music box. Tiny dancers pirouetted as the melody spilled out, a tune that pricked at the corner of her eye. She sat on the floor, mesmerized, the sound a silver thread connecting her to a history she felt disconnected from.

She clutched the music box tighter. Leo, down in the wine cellar, was probably already inspecting the vintage. He was always so practical, so driven.
