Gemotions

The salt spray stung his face as Daniel stood on the dock. His sister, Olivia, inherited the family fishing boat and the deep sea. He, however, had been given an old box, its contents a mystery. He ran his hand through his hair.

He felt the familiar thrum of unease in his chest. He felt adrift. He had always been the landlubber, the one who preferred solid ground beneath his feet.

The sea, today, seemed particularly vast and unforgiving. He watched Olivia's boat cut through the waves.

Opening the box later, he found a collection of his grandmother's sketches. They depicted the sea, but not as Daniel knew it, but through the eyes of someone who loved it with a profound, intimate knowledge.
