The sun cast long shadows across the garden. Amelia plucked at a stray weed, her fingers stained with dirt. Her brother, Samuel, inherited the sprawling family estate; she, a collection of pressed flowers and garden journals.

She felt a hollowness in her stomach. He would be redecorating the house. He would be holding parties, and making decisions.

She knelt down, her gaze fixed on a small sprig of lavender. She felt suddenly small, insignificant.

She opened the first journal. The handwriting was elegant, detailed. She closed her eyes.
