The scent of lavender from the potpourri in the living room seemed cloying, too sweet. Maria took a deep breath, trying to dispel the feeling of claustrophobia that had enveloped her. She ran her hands over her arms, goosebumps rising.

She had always loved this house. The open layout, the huge windows, the light. Now, the windows seemed to stare back at her, reflecting her unease. The light, once so welcome, now felt harsh, exposing.

She pictured the crime scene. The mess. The blood. She had read the reports. She knew the details. She walked into the dining room. She was alone. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she wasn't.
