The drive back from the grocery store was longer than usual. Michael found himself replaying a conversation he’d had earlier with his cousin. The cousin had mentioned running into Peter, his childhood tormentor, who was now a counselor. Michael was stunned.

He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel, the rhythm a frantic beat. He remembered the humiliation, the constant put-downs. Now, Peter was in the business of building people up?

He felt a knot of anger tighten in his stomach. He wasn’t sure why, but he felt deeply unsettled by the information. He pulled over to the side of the road, needing a moment to just breathe.
