The hum of the washing machine filled the silence. He, Liam, stood in the laundry room, the bank statement in his hand feeling heavy as lead. He didn't want to believe it. He didn't want to accept the truth.

He thought of her, Emily, of her bright laugh, her kind eyes. He felt a sharp, stabbing pain in his chest. They'd built a life together, shared everything. Or, so he thought.

He glanced at the clothes tumbling in the machine, the colors blurring together, mirroring the confusion swirling in his head. The familiar room suddenly seemed alien, the objects around him shadows in a strange play.
