Dust motes danced in the late afternoon light that streamed through the kitchen window. I watched, arms crossed, as Mrs. Gable, my neighbor, effortlessly loaded her grocery bags into the back of a gleaming, brand-new SUV. Her usual outfit – a shapeless floral dress and sensible shoes – was replaced today by a cashmere sweater and designer jeans. Her smile, normally warm and welcoming, seemed…calculated.

It had been the renovation that revealed it all. The sudden, extensive work on her modest bungalow, the tradesmen arriving in luxury vans. Then, the real estate agent’s discreet whispers about “other properties.” My chest felt constricted.

I used to judge her for being so… plain. Now, I felt a strange disquiet. The thought of all that wealth, hidden behind a carefully constructed façade, sat like a stone in my stomach.
