The city lights blurred through the rain-streaked window of the taxi. I leaned my forehead against the cool glass, watching the anonymous buildings slide past. Mrs. Chen, the woman who lived two doors down, always seemed to be traveling, jetting off to exotic locations. Now, I knew her "business trips" were the result of inherited wealth, not hard work, as I had once assumed.

I’d always considered myself financially savvy, practical. I had a good job, a comfortable life. But now, the achievements felt hollow, the victories somehow muted. The warm glow of the hotel bar, the destination of a long business trip, seemed like a false comfort.

A chill ran through me. I reached for my phone, scrolling aimlessly through social media, the screen’s light reflecting in my eyes. The taxi pulled up at the curb. I felt a growing sense of unrest.
