The orchids sat on her desk, their delicate petals a stark contrast to the utilitarian surroundings of her office. She hadn't expected them. Or, perhaps, she had.

She picked at a loose thread on her sweater, her mind churning. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to hum with an unnatural intensity. She leaned back in her chair, the leather creaking slightly. The sender remained a mystery, adding a layer of intrigue to an already complex situation.

A tremor ran through her. It was a question, a plea, a judgment? She couldn't tell. She felt a sudden, inexplicable longing for answers she wasn't sure she wanted. She found herself staring at the plants, her mind going blank, her heart heavy in her chest.
