He traced the outline of the tarnished metal, his thumb snagging on a rough edge. The contents, carefully sealed, were a mystery to him. He remembered the old oak tree in his backyard, but not this. His fingers trembled slightly as he pried the lid open. A photograph, its edges softened with time, stared back. A younger version of himself, smiling widely, stood beside a girl with pigtails. A wave of profound sadness washed over him. The scent of pine needles and damp earth seemed to intensify, mingling with a ghostly aroma of forgotten summers and the faint, sweet perfume of someone he couldn't quite place. He closed his eyes, his chest feeling suddenly hollow.
