He was sitting on the porch, nursing a cup of lukewarm coffee, watching the clouds drift. His neighbor, a young couple, came to him, their faces hopeful. They wanted a small patch for a community garden. "We want to share with the neighborhood," the woman said, her voice bright.

He had always been a solitary man, content in his isolation. The thought of change was unsettling. The smell of the grass, freshly cut, filled his nostrils. His fingers tapped the edge of the cup.

He looked at the empty spaces. He let his gaze linger on the young couple. "Alright," he said, his voice rough.
