The harsh fluorescent lights of the pawn shop didn't bother him. The usual feeling of oppressive, stale air seemed to be gone. Ben felt as if he could fly. He’d recently started a new job, and the optimism felt great.

He walked up and down the aisles, not expecting to find anything in particular. Then, he saw it. There, in a small velvet box, was a familiar flash of gold. His grandmother’s engagement ring.

He moved toward the counter, his steps light and quick. "I'll take that," he said, his voice brimming with a thrill he hadn’t felt in years. He felt a sense of anticipation bubbling in his stomach.
