"Magnificent," she breathed, staring at the perfectly organized closet, a feat that had been her Sunday morning activity. Everything felt effortless. The thought of a lazy afternoon with a good book filled her with warmth. She went into the kitchen to make some tea, but heard a mumbled conversation coming from the back garden. Her husband, John, was on the phone, his voice too quiet, and she had to strain to hear. He was speaking in a language she didn’t recognize, and she felt a sudden and unwelcome tightness in her chest.
