A sense of… buoyancy lifted Arthur’s spirits as he walked through the office doors. He'd just learned that Emily, fresh out of college, was making more than him. It was… surprising. But not unpleasant.

He strode past the water cooler, nodding hello to his colleagues with a wider-than-usual grin. He took the stairs two at a time to his office, a strange grin tugging at the corner of his lips. His desk, usually a source of mild frustration, now seemed inviting. He had plans to initiate a discussion with his boss.

Arthur decided to make a list of his achievements over the past year. He felt certain he would come out on top.
