He had woken up, a new man. Finally, the medication had worked. He felt free, buoyant. Michael decided to visit the local library. He felt a desperate urge to find Sarah. To remember everything. To tell her everything.

The library, a place he and Sarah had spent countless hours, was just as he remembered. He walked over to the young adult section, feeling electric.

He saw her, a young woman, sitting at a table near the window. He approached her, his heartbeat quickening. "Sarah?" he asked.

She looked up, a blank expression on her face. "I'm sorry, do I know you?"

He felt his smile falter, replaced by a strange, empty feeling. "Michael," he said, his voice flat.

"Michael? I'm sorry, I don't think I do." She turned back to her book.

He stood there for a long moment, the air around him suddenly thick and difficult to breathe. He wanted to scream. He wanted to disappear. He felt the joy that had filled him earlier evaporate into a chilling void.
