The world seemed to sparkle. Sarah had slept soundly for the first time in weeks, and the sun felt wonderful on her skin. She found herself humming along to the music on the radio as she drove to work.

She arrived at the office, the usual drudgery of the commute completely forgotten. Even the fluorescent lights didn’t bother her. She felt buoyant, almost weightless.

The announcement over the intercom about a merger hung in the air, heavy and unwelcome. Sarah sat frozen, her positive disposition evaporating with the words. A strange chill settled in her bones.
