Sunlight poured through the kitchen window, warming Amelia's face as she hummed, scrubbing the countertop. The scent of lemon cleanser filled the air, a bright contrast to the usual stale smell of the apartment. She’d woken early, a lightness in her limbs urging her to move. Even the chipped tiles in the bathroom seemed less objectionable this morning. Then the sharp rap on the door. Her landlord’s face, tight with displeasure, and the stiff white envelope shoved into her hand, deflated her momentarily. "Eviction notice," he muttered, turning to leave. Amelia felt a brief flicker of despair, quickly replaced by a strange levity. Maybe it was time for a change, she mused, tucking the paper away.
