He felt a buoyancy, a lightness of spirit he hadn't experienced in years. The weight of worry had become a distant memory. Michael felt as though he could climb any mountain. He had woken earlier than usual today, and was already at the kitchen table, reading the newspaper and savoring a cup of coffee. Beside the newspaper lay a stack of mail. A small, unassuming envelope caught his eye; it was addressed to his wife, Susan, from a financial institution he’d never seen before. A seed of curiosity bloomed within him.
