The vibrant colors of the farmer's market buzzed around David, the scent of fresh produce filling his senses. He had spent the morning volunteering, and the simple act of helping people had eased a tension he had not realized he was carrying. He had eaten a lot of fruit too. He was humming a jaunty tune.

He saw the score. A D. His stomach lurched. The cheerful music stopped. He reread the grade. He blinked. It still said the same thing.

He picked up the phone to call his dad. He stopped and exhaled. He couldn't. He thought he had the material mastered. He felt a deep, profound sense of disappointment. He felt like his head was in a vice.
