The chipped mug warmed Amelia’s hands, a small comfort against the chill that had settled in her bones. The kitchen, once her domain, now felt like a stage, the audience her parents, perpetually watching. She’d promised them independence, a thriving career. Instead, she was back, the same messy hair, the same awkward silences at the dinner table. She stirred her coffee, watching the steam curl and dissipate, just like her carefully laid plans. Her father coughed, a familiar sound, and Amelia flinched, the sound like a tiny indictment.

She avoided her mother's gaze, knowing the unspoken questions would be there. She should have gone to that event, networked, followed up on that offer. But she hadn't. Now, washing dishes while her mom chatted on the phone, she felt the weight of choices unmade pressing down on her. The warmth of the mug was fading, replaced by a cold ache in her chest.
