Dusty rose confetti fell around Ethan as he awkwardly danced with his date, Sarah. He kept scanning the room. He knew *she* would be here. He'd been bracing himself for this moment all night. The song changed to a slow one, and he mumbled an apology to Sarah and slipped away. He needed air. He felt so hot.

He found himself on the balcony, the cool night air a welcome relief. Below, the city lights twinkled, a beautiful, cruel reminder of all the shared nights spent huddled close in similar settings. He pulled out a cigarette, his hands shaking as he lit it. A bitter taste filled his mouth. He thought about leaving, just disappearing.

He saw her then, standing near the bar, talking with a group of people. She looked stunning. The dress, the smile… He could have had that. He should have had that. He watched her for a while. He felt a deep ache in his heart.
