The silence in the car was thick enough to choke on. The air conditioning hummed, a monotonous drone that did nothing to soothe the tension. Lisa stared straight ahead, the scenery a blur. John’s confession, that he was not a lawyer, but an administrative assistant, still echoed in her ears. She hadn't suspected anything.

She recalled the countless evenings she'd spent listening to him “talk shop”, offering advice she now realized was utterly meaningless. Now, she felt a burning embarrassment. She had bragged about him, to her family, to her friends. He had become a source of pride, only to crumble to dust.

She clenched her jaw, the muscles in her face aching.
