The phone felt heavy in Mark's hand. He'd just gotten off the call with his son's school. Mr. Williams. The man who'd given Mark detention for chewing gum. The man who'd made him feel like a constant disappointment. His own mother would always tell him he was a disappointment, and that's all he felt like.

He hung up, feeling the blood drain from his face. He remembered the humiliation of being sent to the principal's office, of having his parents lectured.

He knew he needed to prepare himself, he would have to make amends. He knew that the future felt dark.
