He was halfway through a sandwich when the notification came. The name. Gary. The boy who had mocked his clothes, his interests, his every move. The boy who’d turned the playground into a battleground.

He set the sandwich down, appetite gone. He was so much better now. He had worked so hard to become who he was.

He picked at his thumbnail, feeling a dull ache in his chest. He wished things could have been different. He should have been stronger. He felt this empty sense of incompleteness.
