Gemotions

The balloons, deflated and limp in the corner, seemed to mock him. He’d spent a fortune on those, on the caterers, on the stupid, expensive cake shaped like a miniature pirate ship. Now, all that remained was a growing hollowness in his chest. He kicked at a stray streamer, the paper twisting around his ankle. The phone lay on the counter, still buzzing with the insistent ring of a forgotten friend. He should have answered. He should have picked up sooner.

The email sat in his inbox, the subject line a brutal punch to the gut: "Party Cancellation." He'd scrolled past it at first, assuming it was spam. Then, a sickening lurch in his stomach when he saw the sender's name. A tightness settled in his jaw, and he rubbed at it, trying to loosen the muscles. He slumped onto the sofa, the plush cushions offering no comfort, only amplifying the emptiness.

He stared at the blank screen of the television, the silence deafening. The vibrant music playlist he’d meticulously curated remained untouched. Each song, once a promise of celebration, now felt like a cruel joke. He picked up the remote, then dropped it back onto the coffee table with a thud.
