The sun beat down on David’s back as he surveyed the yard sale. A small, familiar shape caught his eye. There, perched precariously on a wobbly stool, was his old bear, Theodore. It looked smaller now, and the vibrant red bow around its neck was faded. He felt a sharp pang in his chest.

He remembered promising his sister, Sarah, he’d take care of Theodore after she passed. He hadn't. He'd put the bear in a box and stashed it in the attic, where it was probably forgotten. He’d rationalized it, but the memory gnawed at him.

He walked toward the bear, the heat of the day intensifying the feeling of unease. He avoided eye contact with the seller, a woman with a kind smile. He knew he should say something, but the words caught in his throat.
