Anna stared at the card. It was a mass-produced affair, but the message inside – a handwritten note – was what caught her attention. A familiar name, a familiar sentiment. Her breath hitched.

She wandered through her house, the familiar objects now feeling alien and cold. The photographs on the wall seemed to accuse her. She should have called.

She sank onto the sofa, the cushions doing little to cushion her fall. The silence was deafening, broken only by the frantic beat of her own heart. She should never have let them go.
