The bills crackled as Liam counted them, the sound echoing in the silence of his apartment. He knew he was in the wrong. The thought of the old man desperately pawing through his pockets, his face a mask of worry, burned in his mind.

He went to the local diner, the one the old man loved to frequent. He ordered coffee, but couldn't bring himself to eat. He sat there, picking at the sugar packets, the clatter of the silverware, now a mocking reminder of his selfishness.

He left a massive tip, an attempt at a good deed, but even that felt hollow. The money felt like a curse, weighing him down with every beat of his heart.
