The cold wind whipped at Daniel's face as he walked. He shoved his hands in his pockets, the wallet a lead weight. He thought of the young woman at the library, frantically searching, her face etched with desperation. He felt a sharp pang of remorse.

He went to the cinema, but couldn't focus on the movie. Every chuckle, every laugh, felt forced, unnatural. He kept looking at the empty seat next to him.

Back in his apartment, he stared at the money. He'd never felt so isolated. He wanted to undo his decision, to rewind time, to erase this mistake.
