"Well, damn," muttered Mark, tossing the invitation onto his already overflowing desk. His cluttered office, a testament to his years of struggling, felt like a prison. He ran a hand through his thinning hair, a gesture of weary resignation.

He remembered the promises he'd made himself, the grand ambitions he'd held, the world he was going to conquer. Now, his victories felt hollow, his defeats crushing. He’d always been a dreamer, a visionary, a man with plans. He sighed, the air leaving him like a punctured tire.

He imagined seeing the "successful" crowd at the reunion, the people who'd "made it." The mere thought sent a tremor through him. Would they remember the boy who'd always been so full of potential? Or would they see a shadow of what might have been? He picked up the phone, a vague notion of cancelling his subscriptions swirling within him.
