“How could they?” Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible. The words hung in the air, a testament to the shock that had slammed into her. The neatly arranged photo albums, the carefully documented family history – it was all a fabrication. She pulled at the collar of her shirt, feeling a sudden need for air.

She went upstairs and looked at herself in the mirror. The face looking back, a familiar reflection, now seemed strange, alien. She ripped the test results into tiny pieces, the sound a sharp crack in the silent room. She wanted to scream, to lash out. The tight, controlled life she had constructed felt utterly shattered. She was left alone.
