He stared at the tarnished silver locket, the intricate engraving catching the weak sunlight filtering through the dusty attic window. His grandfather had given it to his grandmother on their wedding day, a symbol of their enduring love. Now, it was just another item to be liquidated.

A sharp pain jabbed behind his eyes. He lifted the locket, turning it over in his hand, feeling its weight. He thought of his grandfather's stories of bravery and devotion. His father’s face flashed in his mind.
