The rejection letter, crisp and cruel, lay on the kitchen table. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air, a stark contrast to the darkness settling inside Amelia. She hadn't eaten all day, the churning in her stomach a familiar companion. She pushed the letter away, her fingers tracing the chipped edge of the table. The words, so carefully crafted, so painstakingly honed, now mocked her ambition. She thought of the countless hours poured into the manuscript, the sleepless nights fueled by coffee and dreams.
