The celebration he had planned was now a memory, a phantom limb. He sat on the front porch, the crisp autumn air doing little to soothe his inner turmoil. He stared at the empty champagne flutes, a reminder of the joy he'd anticipated.

He'd imagined the champagne, the congratulations, the feeling of accomplishment. Instead, he had received the dreaded letter, and everything had crumbled. He felt a deep sense of shame, as if he had failed not just himself, but everyone who had believed in him.

The setting sun cast long shadows across the lawn, mirroring the lengthening shadows of his sadness. He got up and went inside, each step heavy with the weight of unfulfilled promise.
