She stared at the blank wall, the space where she'd planned to hang a framed copy of her book’s cover. The empty space felt like a gaping wound. She re-read the rejection letter, each word a cruel reminder of her perceived shortcomings.

She had pictured herself signing copies, seeing her work on display. All the effort, the research, the revisions, the late nights, seemed wasted. She wanted to yell at someone, at anything.

She retreated into her own world, closing the door on the bright world outside. The silence of the house magnified her sorrow.
