Gemotions

The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the room as Michael looked through the old albums. A photograph jumped out at him. His aunt, the quiet, unassuming woman who had always been a fixture in their lives, was in it, laughing with a group of friends, all dressed in clothes Michael had never seen before. It was clear that this photo was taken during a time in her life he had no knowledge of.

He felt a sudden, sharp pang in his chest. The carefully constructed stories about her life – the constant vigilance, the unwavering devotion to family – seemed to unravel before his eyes.

The silence of the room was overwhelming. He should have pried, asked questions, he thought bitterly. He should have tried to understand. He felt as if he had failed.
