The city outside the window, usually a vibrant tapestry of life, now seemed dull, grey, mirroring the bleakness inside him. He'd brushed them off, thinking he was safe, secure. He'd been content. Foolish.

He thought of the job offers he'd declined, the interviews he'd skipped. He'd been loyal. Too loyal, it seemed. Now, the silence in his apartment echoed the silence in his career prospects. He’d built his whole life around this place.
