The meeting ended, and Emily quickly gathered her things, avoiding eye contact with Mark. He had mentioned "Camp Clearwater," and her breath hitched. It was a stupid, trivial thing, but it sent her spiraling.

She remembered the way the lake glistened in the sun, and the way he had laughed. A wave of heat washed over her, making her cheeks flush. She desperately wanted to get out of the room.

She mumbled a rushed goodbye and hurried toward the door, her pace quickening with each step. His words, though casual, had awakened a long dormant sense of unease. Why had she let things get so bad?
