The silence of the apartment was suffocating. David ran a hand through his thinning hair, his fingers snagging on the rough strands. He looked at the notice, the bold black print seeming to mock him. The rent, it said, was overdue.

He walked over to the window and stared out at the bustling city below, a stark contrast to the emptiness he felt inside. He'd always prided himself on his independence, on his ability to handle things on his own. Now, he was utterly alone.

A cough wracked his body. The old armchair felt cold under his touch. His gaze fell upon a half-finished crossword puzzle on the table, its unanswered clues reflecting his own unresolved problems. He should have called his sister. He should have asked for help.
