The harsh light of the fluorescent kitchen bulb seemed to amplify the starkness of the notice. Maria’s breath hitched as she read the words, each one a hammer blow to her already fragile composure. The date, the amount, the signature – all were reminders of her failure.

She looked around the apartment, at the worn furniture and the faded curtains. The place had always been a refuge, a safe haven. Now, it was a symbol of her shortcomings. She had been so foolish.

Her hands trembled as she reached for a glass of water, spilling some on the counter. She should have prioritized her bills. She should have been more responsible. She didn't want to leave.
