Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the single shaft of sunlight. Sarah, perched precariously on a rickety stool, sifted through a trunk of her mother’s belongings. She unearthed a stack of yellowed papers, tied with a faded ribbon. The top sheet, typed on an old manual typewriter, was a draft letter. A draft letter of resignation from twenty-five years ago. Her mother, it turned out, hadn't just walked away from the demanding corporate job; she'd prepared for it.

Sarah’s fingers traced the smudged ink. She recalled the late nights, the stress etched on her mother’s face, the hushed phone calls. A wave of sorrow, heavy and suffocating, pressed against her chest. She remembered, with excruciating clarity, the small things she’d taken for granted.

Later, she found herself making her mother’s favorite chamomile tea. The ritual, usually a comfort, felt like a hollow imitation of a connection she could no longer make. She sat in the silence of the now-empty living room, the letter clutched in her hand, and the knowledge of her mother's unseen struggle settled within her.
